Seven Up

Adam Chandler scored a stylish ton v Tish
as Rchie Benaud would say
"Pretty to Watch"
Considering it’s been the wettest winter on record the cricket pitches of the county were in fine fettle
for the season’s opener on Sunday with runs being scored almost everywhere apart from the odd blip.

While 2015 saw 10 centuries posted during the first game, 2016 only saw seven although that could have been eight had Kevin Bowen of St Ishmaels 2nds settled for 100 and gave the extra seven run he scored to Robbie Thomas who was left high and dry on 93 not out!

Without being at the games it’s difficult to comment on which would have been the best. Adam Chandler’s Bradmanseque form continues and his 123 not out v St Ishmaels would have been possibly the most stylish while Doc Holliday’s 123 v Carew was chanceless according to those who saw it.

Kern Cunningham’s 125 for Haverfordwest 2nds v Carew 2nds would have been a wham bam thank you mam affair while Luke Hayman’s 118 for Burton against Cresselly seconds would also have been high on the classical list.

Spare a thought for Jake Wickes of Hook. He scored 115 against Pembroke and his team still lost. Credit where it’s due to Fishguard’s Gino Cleal. He scored a ton or two last year and began this campaign with a bang hitting 112 against Hundleton.

As for the bowlers, Adam James and Nathan Banner started their race to finish as the county’s best all-rounder with five wickets apiece in their game and Ben Hughes did the same for Narberth against Llanrhian.

All in all then a great start to the new season.

Team of the week

  1. Kern Cunningham (Haverfordwest 2nds) 125 v Carew 2nds
  2. Adam Chandler (Cresselly) 123 not out v St Ishmaels
  3. Simon Holliday (Haverfordwest) 123 v Carew
  4. Luke Hayman (Burton) 118 v Cresselly 2nds
  5. Jake Wickes (Hook) 115 v Pembroke
  6. Gino Cleal (Fishguard) 112 v Hundleton
  7. Kevin Bowen (St Ishmaels 2nds) 107 not out v Haverfordwest 4ths
  8. Adam James (Haverfordwest) 5-4 v Carew
  9. Nathan Banner (Neyland) 5-39 v Whitland
  10. Ben Hughes (Narberth) 5-21 v Llanrhian
  11. Thomas Cole (Lawrenny 2nds) 5-28 v Haverfordwest 3rds

Noticeable mentions – Nic Evans (Narberth 2nds) he’s well into his 70’s and still taking wickets. Will he ever retire? Why would he when he’s still a main source of poles? 4-24 v Llanrhian 2nds

Talking of Llanrhian, he doesn’t play for them anymore but former Cow Gareth Davies had a debut to remember for Haverfordwest, taking a hat-trick with his first three balls for the club. Anyone know if this has been done before? Highly unlikely. He took 3-0 by the way.

Finally some cricket news about Guest players. Below is a copy of an e-mail sent to all clubs by Child Welfare Officer & Player Registration Officer, Dave Loosmore:

Dear Cricket Secretary,
At a recent meeting of the Executive Committee a long and in-depth discussion took place regarding ‘Bona Fide’ playing members, Registration and guest players.

As not all leagues in Wales use a registration process, the management of player’s registration in Pembrokeshire is very difficult.

The past precedent that was set was found to be flawed and was open to misinterprtation.
Moving forward the following process will be administered for players, who then play outside of Pembrokeshire:

Scenario 1:
If a player, who is properly registered for a Club in Pembrokeshire, plays for a Club in another league, then their Pembrokeshire Club registration will be automatically cancelled.

If the player then wishes to return to a Club in Pembrokeshire in the same season, then that player must complete the registration process, prior to playing for the Pembrokeshire Club.
This registration will have to be sanctioned by the County Executive.

Should this same player then decide that they are going to play for a Club outside Pembrokeshire again, then that player’s registration will be cancelled and that player will not be eligible to register for any Club in Pembrokeshire for the rest of that season.

Scenario 2:
If an unregistered player, who has played in a league outside of Pembrokeshire in the current season, wishes to play for a Pembrokeshire Club, then again, they must complete the registration process.

This registration will have to be sanctioned by the County Executive.

Scenario 3:
Should a player, who played in a league outside of Pembrokeshire in the previous season, wish to register for a Club in Pembrokeshire, then that player just completes the registration process as normal.

If the player then decides to play for a Club outside of Pembrokeshire, then the Pembrokeshire Club registration will be cancelled. Should the player wish to return to a Club in Pembrokeshire, then that player will have to write to the County Executive, requesting permission to register for the Pembrokeshire Club.

The County Executive has the right to refuse registration without explanation.

Any player, who has played in a league outside of Pembrokeshire, in the current season, will NOT be eligible to play in any cup competition played under the auspices of the Pembroke County Cricket Club, during that season, even if their Club registration has been accepted by the County Executive.

Regards,
Dave
Registration Officer - Pembroke County Cricket Club
