The Comeback Queens
Hook ladies - celebrating their brilliant comeback |
There’s been some great performances this
season by individuals and teams but does any surpass this performance by Hook
ladies in the final of the Skelfayre cup?
The women’s game is often overlooked in the local scene but there are some great players to be found and the majority were on show in this game played at Hook.
There’s Sam Rossiter who’s scoring runs for fun in men’s cricket. Jo Kerrison, who hobbles about on one knee now as her joints have worn away through playing cricket, hockey, Athletics and such like and Jemma Phillips, daughter of Haverfordwest legend Andrew, who has obviously inherited her father’s predatory instincts in the field having taken a hat-trick of catches in the game. Lets not forget the Scales of Burton, a cricketing family of great pedigree and heritage.
Below is a report written about the game by Hook coach Yacob Cajee, which is as entertaining as the game must have been to all watching.
Was this the greatest comeback of the season so far? Quite possibly and it will be hard to surpass this despite some of the brilliance we've seen.

While England rightly deserved the plaudits
for their total domination of the Australians in the first Test at Cardiff,
Wales witnessed an even more remarkable performance as Hook Ladies rose up from
the ashes to beat Burton in Pembrokeshire’s Skelfayre Cup (sponsored by
G.Thomas & Son).
Burton had beaten Hook in a closely
contested round robin encounter en route to the final before a much more
comfortable league victory only five days before the two innings affair on
Sunday 12 July. Consequently Burton started as clear favourites, despite Hook’s
home advantage
The first innings endorsed the formbook.
Put in to bat on a drying wicket, Hook did well to make 113-2 from their 20
overs, captain Samantha Rossiter making 46 (to follow up the 76 she made for
Hook’s 2nd XI the day before), while Jo Kerrison hit an unbeaten 53,
with Ffion Ashman and Rebecca Jones each taking 1-18.
Ashman then made 47, with sisters Finola
and Llawella Scale 48 and 26 not out respectively as Burton took advantage to
bludgeon their way to 134-1, with Alice Thomas (1-24) the pick of some
inconsistent bowling.
Despite another 20 from Rossiter and 17
from Kerrison, Hook’s second innings never really gained any momentum as
accurate bowling from Jones (1-16), Lily Thomas (2-17) and Llawella Scale
(1-20) suffocated the scoring. Only some lusty blows from Alice Thomas (12) and
Jemma Phillips (12 not out) gave Hook’s 75-5 some respectability.
Burton were already celebrating victory,
but inspired decisions by Rossiter to open with Thomas and set a more attacking
field paid dividends from the first ball as Millie Thomas’s sharp stop and
throw from short fine leg found Finola Scale short of the crease. Fine bowling
from Alice Thomas, who took the prize wickets of both Ashman and the other
Scale in her 3-13, and Leanne Jones (2-11) quickly reduced Burton to 23-6.
A dogged partnership between Campbell and
Jones took the score to 44 before Campbell fell to Megan Le Petit for 12, the
first of a hat-trick for the 13-year old Le Petit, who finished with 3-9. There
was still hope for Burton with Jones still at the crease, especially when she
was caught off a no ball from Phillips, which took the score to 50. This seemed
to sum up a disappointing day with the ball for Phillips, but she came back
next ball to trap Jones LBW for 13 to cap an unforgettable fight back by Hook.
