Yoggy Yoggy Yoggy

Spare a thought for Cresselly’s Bobby Webb. Having taken
Jonathan Rogers bowling last season v Saundersfoot
8-52 against Hook he no doubt thought he secured the best bowling figures of the day but then news would have filtered through that Jonathan Rogers of Pembroke surpassed him.

Rogers, or Yoggy as he is affectionately known managed to tear Haverfordwest’s seconds to shreds in taking 9-13 off his 12 overs. At one stage the Town’s stiffs were reduced to 49-9 but managed to sneak up to 102 all out.

Early starts were the name of the game for some clubs as they sought an early finish to watch Wales in the Euros but had Haverfordwest been all out for 50 that would have been taking the biscuit. The game would have been done and dusted by 4 if not earlier.

While Webb and Rogers took 17 wickets between them, Saturday was again a day for the centurions with no fewer than five raising their bats.

Haverfordwest’s Simon Holliday was the highest scorer with 133 against Llanrhian but Yoggy and Webb went one better.

It’s said that a bowler taking five wickets is the equivalent of scoring a ton meaning that every wicket is worth 20 runs (if you believe that that is).

This means of course that Rogers amassed 180 with Webb scoring a mere 160.

That’s all hypothetical of course but what can’t be disputed is that Haverfordwest first team are the most miserly and mean team around having conceded just 24 points against opposition this season.
Despite this, they sit in third place behind Cresselly and Neyland who face each other this weekend.

Adam Chandler has scored over 500 runs for Cresselly this season and it’s fair to say he is the wicket all bowlers covet this year. That said, Simon Cole struck 96 on Saturday so Neyland’s bowlers will have to be on song against him too.

Chandler though has had a Bradmanesque run of form since the middle of last season which shows no sign of abating.

He’s always been a good player but his levels of consistent run scoring have impressed everyone.
The secret to his success?

A change in attitude.

He aims to bat the 45 overs and if he does so, he knows he’ll score runs.

Everyone does that though don’t they? Especially the openers yet few can carry it through. Anyone can have the attitude of batting the innings out yet it still takes skill to do so; maybe the attitude change isn’t the real reason at all, maybe he’s realised just how good he is.

Congratulations by the way to Neyland’s Steve Murray after scoring his first ton for the club. His hard hitting 101 almost took Neyland 2nds to victory over Pembroke Dock yet the hosts held firm for a narrow seven run win. A bittersweet moment if ever there was one.

He, like Holliday and Chandler makes this week’s team of the week.
