Two's Up
A little bit of history was made in Pembrokeshire last Saturday when Laugharne’s Kevin Pearce raised his bat for a double century on the fine batting track that is Pembroke Dock.
It was the second double century of the season, the first time such a feat has ever occurred in Pembrokeshire cricket.
A week rarely goes by these days without a century being scored in one of our five divisions but going one further for a double is still a rare occurrence.
Pearce is a good player, a player with too good for division five but as the saying goes, you still have to score them and score them he certainly did.
His innings helped the league’s new boys record their 12th win of the season to keep their unbeaten record intact.
In truth it was never in doubt. As soon as the visitors were invited to bat the writing was on the wall for the home team and it didn’t take long for them to take the game away from the hosts.
They declared on 324-1 in just 30 overs and given they play straight win/lose cricket in division five (it’s the future according to many) there was no hope of the Dock getting it given they had barely reached 50 in their previous two or three games.
Suffice to say they lost and it was quite a heavy defeat too. They were bowled out for 35 to go down by 289 runs which is quite possibly a record defeat in Pembrokeshire Cricket
The result showed the teams were poles apart in terms of playing ability as does their league standings with Laugharne sitting pretty at t,he top and the Dock propping the table up.
But we can learn from the league’s basement battlers. They have struggled to raise a side for most weeks this season but despite their off-field troubles they manage to play, even if they go to battle with less than 11.
They play with a smile on their faces even when things don’t go their way and that’s what cricket is all about.
Incidentally the other player to score a double ton this year was Llechryd’s John Curran who scored his in his first outing of the season.
He too scored 204 and followed it up with a century the week after.
If Pearce plays this weekend, will he do the same?
Suffice to say he makes the Team of the week.
