Punished

I wondered in the summer whether the rivalry between Carew and Cresselly was as intense as it once was, there is afterall reason to believe it isn’t.
In recent years more players have moved between the clubs. Cresselly players play for the Rooks in football (seperate from the cricket but still Carew) and along with many from Lawrenny, a lot live in the same estate in Sageston so they’re all neighbours. In fact, that estate could lay a claim to having the strongest team in the county.
After the debacle of the final game of the season it’s fair to say that intensity has been renewed although it pales into insignificance to what many Carew players will feel towards the County Executive Committee after the verdict of Tuesday’s disciplinary hearing was announced.
Carew have been charged with ‘Acting in a manner calculated to prejudice the good name and interests of Pembroke County Club' while Brian Hall has been charged with ‘Not playing in the spirit of the game’.
As a result they’ve been relegated to division two, Fined £300 and Hall’s been banned for the 2018 season, the second half of which is suspended.
Both charges are moot points and like anything relating to law are open to interpretation but given Carew will now be playing a division below their capabilities next season one has to ask, are other clubs being penalised too because of what Carew did?
As with anything these days, social media has been rife with comments.
Feelings are split between those thinking Carew are getting what they deserved for making a declaration that’s been described as unsporting and cowardly, while others think the punishment is over the top.
As one Facebook user commented:
‘What a load of crap not fair div 3 champs having to play div 1 champions.’ while Piers Morgan had his say on Twitter saying ‘Karma's a b**ch, babies.’
The first point, made by Lamphey’s Andrew Skeels is a good one. Carew went into that final game with a 21 point lead over Cresselly.
League tables don’t lie so it’s fair to say they were the best team in division one last season.
They won 13 games, more than any other team. They beat all comers, the Rooks ruled the roost.
If they did that in division one what will they do in division two next season? Is that fair on the teams playing there?
Likewise it’s had a knock on effect for other teams with Kilgetty staying up in division one by default and Whitland seconds the same in division two given Carew’s seconds will now play in division three.
The County Executive were damned if they did and damned if they didn’t surrounding this furore but they had to be seen to do something, the feeling surrounding the declaration was too high for them not to.
In short they were caught between a rock and a hard place and when a case like this crops up, the men on it will be wondering why they volunteered for the role in the first place.
The decisions they make have ramifications for everyone and they wouldn’t have reached the decision lightly.
It would have been a difficult decision to make and no doubt they will be wondering if the punishment dished out to Carew was the right one as they returned to their day jobs the morning after deciding it.
Carew think it isn’t.
No doubt  they’ll consider lodging an appeal so all parties will have to go through the process again if they go down that route.
Will we see a different outcome if they do?

Time will tell but one thing is for certain, Pembrokeshire cricket isn’t out of the news just yet.

    But it's not all bad. This study actually highlights the remarkable diversity of life around us, which few of us notice on a day to day basis. As Bertone says, we might not notice many of these creatures because — if they aren't pests and don't bother us — we don't see much of an impact on our Watch Cricket Updates On Crictime.
