Same Same
We’re three league games into the season and already the signs are there that little will change from years gone by.
The top four in division one will most probably include Haverfordwest, Neyland, Cresselly and Carew (not in that particular order, that’s just how they came into my head) and the rest will battle it out for who stays up and who goes down.
According to one prominent cricketing stalwart who shall remain nameless, the gap between the top four and the rest is bigger than it has ever been although I’m sure they rest will have something to say about that.
Kilgetty will be one of them having made a good start to life in the top division after a hiatus of 15 years years or so. It’s incredible to think the club imploded around the time of the Millennium when they were one of the biggest clubs around but they are certainly back with a bang and they will give any club a run for their money.
How good is Daniel Sutton too? His innings of 121 not out against the Kingsmoor outfit last week will have been a joy to watch, coming as the second ton of the match following Kyle Marsh’s 105.
After having scored 483 runs in their first two games Kilgetty could lay claim to having the strongest batting line up in the league but surely that accolade goes to Neyland.
In the first game against Haverfordwest, which ended up being a low scoring epic, they had a first division centurion batting at number 10. That’s one above 11 who traditionally is meant to be the worst batsman in the team.
Yes Henry Durrant, a hard hitting all-rounder found himself there against the Town and it was just as well he was. He might have been miffed at being so low down but he was instrumental in getting Neyland close to the host’s meagre target after they were 48-8 at one stage.
He’d be a top order batsman at most clubs but not Neyland as they have Paul Murray back playing after a couple of seasons out and he’s already showing his class (87 not out against lawrenny on Saturday).
They have Patrick Bellerby too who hit 118 not out in the Black Caps’ nine wicket win chasing 227.
A side that will challenge the claim of having the best batting line up is Laugharne. Back in the league after almost two decades out they have won their two games with ease and are certs for promotion.
They’ve scored 589 runs so far and have had four separate centurions! There’s been nine tons scored so far this term and four of them come from the West Carmarthenshire club.
Sunday sees the first County game of the season as Pembrokeshire take on the Welsh XL Club at Kilgetty, a team of Over 35’s who are captained by Haverfordwest’s Simon Holliday.
The County team looks a decent one led by Whitland’s Matthew Davies and with the way Kilgetty’s pitch plays these days, no doubt the home team should find scoring runs relatively easy against the old (ish) men of Wales!
Either way, they’ll be hoping for some form this Saturday to prepare themselves for the first of six county fixtures.
They could even make it into the Team of the Week
