What a week

It’s been a fabulous week for cricket in Pembrokeshire. If last Saturday produced some interesting results the cup games this week made for even more talking points and none more so than the game between Llangwm and Carew in the Duggie Morris cup.
The game was decided on a Golden over after the teams’ were tied on 132 apiece following their allotted 20 overs with Carew just snatching it by winning the decider 12 runs to five.
The match was a good one for Shaun Whitfield as he smashed a quickfire 32, an innings that was so impressive that it had people speaking highly of his talent. He took 2-18 for good measure too while Tom Davies continued his fine form with 4-28 to followed up his five wickets on Saturday.
Llangwm impressed too with James Venables striking a  fluent 64 and Will Beresford and elegant 27.
A few miles west at St Ishmaels, the home side gave Haverfordwest a fright by just losing out by two runs, scoring 161 for 4 in reply to the visitor’s 163 in which Ben Field shone scoring a stylish 82 not out.
His was the only innings of note for the Town, the next highest score being Archie Thomas’ 18, unless you count wides that is.
Ever since the leg side rule was introduced into cup games, wides have played an even bigger part on how matches are settled and this was highlighted at Tish with the home team’s bowlers conceding 25 of them.
Not only is this 25 extra runs for the opposition it also provide an additional 4.1 overs for Haverfordwest to score from.
Good job the game was sponsored by Sally and Johnny from the Brook Inn then as that would have been a great place for the Tish’s bowlers to drown their sorrows!
No doubt they will be reflecting on that missed opportunity for a while but at Hook, Lamphey skipper James Skeels will be reflecting on his match for a different reason.
Not only did he score his first competitive century he also ensured another first by becoming the first father and son combination to each score a century for the Stags.
James’ innings came off just 44 balls and was a brilliant exhibition of strokeplay while 22 years ago, against Cardigan, his father’s came more sedately and was a exhibition of nudging and nurdling and scuttled singles.
Mind you, he very nearly didn’t score it at all as Australian import Brett Johnston was causing mayhem at the other end. It led Skeels senior to summons Johnston to a mid wicket conference between overs.
“Now listen here old chap,” he said. “You score centuries for fun and this may be my only chance to get one so would you be so kind as to provide more of the strike to me? I’d appreciate it ever so much if you did.”
His polite question was answered in the affirmative and he duly raised his bat!
The Harrison-Allen provided some talking points too. Kilgetty won off the last ball at Lawrenny while Aaron Keane smashed the ball all around the park for Narberth against Stackpole in his exhilarating 114 not out.
In league action, Daniel Sutton shone once again with his blade scoring a second successive century for Johnston, hitting 110 not out against Neyland.
When he’s on form, Sutton certainly scores big. He once hit three ton’s in four games when he played for Lamphey many moons ago. Who’d bet against him scoring another the next time he bats?
A word too about a young left arm bowler form Haverfordwest who is making his mark in the top division.
Johnny White seems to be improving every game. Two wickets in his first match, four in his second and now five against Lawrenny last Saturday.
Left arm over provides a different angle in which to bat against and is even more difficult when it’s done at pace and he has some of that.
Wasim Akram is highly regarded as one of the best bowlers of all time and years ago, Tommy Jones terrorised local batsmen when gliding in for Neyland. Who is to say White can’t do the same? He was playing Under 15 cricket last season. The boy has got talent.
He, alongside Sutton makes the Team of the week:
  1. Daniel Sutton (Johnston) 110 not out v Neyland
  2. Iwan Izzard (Cresselly) 91 v Pembroke
  3. Tom Davies (Carew) 83 and 5-29 v St Ishmaels
  4. Matthew Holder (Hook seconds) 76 and 2-45 v Kilgetty seconds
  5. Jonathan Twigg (Llangwm seconds) 71 v Neyland thirds
  6. Richard Jones (Burton) 77 v Whitland seconds
  7. Richard Thorne (Crymych) 66 v Hundleton
  8. Mike Williams (Llangwm seconds) 7-17 v Neyland thirds
  9. Kerry Waters (Carew seconds) 6-15 v  Haverfordwest seconds
  10. Johnnie White (Haverfordwest) 5-22 v Lawrenny
  11. Jack Parkinson (Kilgetty) 5-27 v Whitland
